Course description

Oracle Database: Multitenant Architecture introduces administrators to the modern cloud-ready database framework engineered by Oracle. This course covers the consolidation of multiple isolated databases without changing existing application structures.

Students will learn the architectural differences between traditional standalone databases and modern Multitenant Container Databases (CDBs) that house multiple individual Pluggable Databases (PDBs).

Participants will gain deep practical experience provisioning, managing, and maintaining containerized environments. The curriculum walks students through creating new PDBs from scratch, cloning existing ones for testing environments, hot-plugging databases across different systems, and managing common vs. local users.

Additionally, the course covers how to manage system resources such as memory, CPU, and I/O profiles across various pluggable units using Oracle Resource Manager.

By the end of this course, database administrators will have the structural skills necessary to maximize server hardware utilization, streamline backup schedules for consolidated environments, and manage secure cloud-scale database operations.

What will i learn?

  • Architect Container and Pluggable Databases: Differentiate and construct the layout of Container Databases (CDBs) and provision independent Pluggable Databases (PDBs) smoothly.
  • Manage PDB Lifecycles and Migrations: Execute advanced provisioning workflows including cloning, unplugging, plugging, and migrating pluggable databases between local and remote containers.
  • Configure Consolidated Resource Allocations: Utilize Oracle Resource Manager to create profiles that restrict or prioritize CPU, I/O, and memory usage for specific PDB nodes.

Requirements

  • Successful Completion of the Administration Workshop: Strong core understanding of standard database operations, background processes, memory structures, and basic storage parameters.
  • Familiarity with Standard SQL Tools: Comfortable executing administrative commands via SQL*Plus or SQL Developer.
  • Practice Lab Environment Setup: Access to an installation of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition configured with multitenant options enabled to perform plugging and cloning exercises.

Frequently asked question

The multitenant architecture allows a company to run dozens of isolated databases on a single server engine, sharing the core memory and background background processes. This drastically cuts down hardware infrastructure costs, simplifies upgrading tasks, and allows an administrator to back up fifty individual databases all at the exact same time by running one command on the root container.

Yes, multitenant concepts form a massive portion of the objectives tested on the Oracle Database Administration II Exam (1Z0-083) which leads to the Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional (OCP) designation.

Absolutely. Every Pluggable Database (PDB) behaves exactly like a standalone database to applications and local users. You can configure unique encryption keys, distinct user roles, and isolated database schemas within each individual PDB.
