Course description

Oracle Database: Backup and Recovery Workshop focuses heavily on the single most critical responsibility of a database administrator: protecting enterprise data from loss or corruption.

This course takes students deep into the mechanics of database backup, restore, and recovery architectures. Participants will master Oracle Recovery Manager (RMAN), learning how to build automated, highly reliable backup schedules that include full, incremental, and image copy backups.

The curriculum covers a wide array of failure scenarios, training students to diagnose structural database problems and execute precise recovery plans. Students will gain practical experience recovering from data file loss, control file damage, and user errors.

In addition to RMAN, the workshop explores Oracle's advanced Flashback technologies, which allow administrators to quickly rewind individual tables, query historical data, or revert an entire database to a specific point in time without resorting to traditional backups.

By the end of this course, students will possess the practical skills required to design a bulletproof business continuity plan and confidently restore business operations after unexpected server crashes or media failures.

What will i learn?

  • Deploy RMAN Backup Architectures: Configure RMAN environment parameters, manage recovery catalogs, and create complete, automated, incremental, and archived backup strategies.
  • Execute Full Media Recovery Protocols: Diagnose instance file corruptions and perform successful data restorations across various critical failure points, including losing control files or system datafiles.
  • Implement Point-In-Time Flashback Operations: Utilize Oracle Flashback Database, Flashback Table, and Flashback Drop commands to rapidly undo user mistakes and structural data changes.

Requirements

  • Successful Completion of the Administration Workshop: Strong foundational knowledge of managing Oracle instances, storage structures, parameter files, and background processes.
  • Familiarity with ARCHIVELOG Mode Concept: A basic understanding of how the database records historical data transactions using online and archived redo log streams.
  • Configured Practice Environment: Access to an isolated operating system command-line terminal with a running Oracle Database software setup to test recovery destructive testing labs.

Frequently asked question

Yes. One of the core focuses of this workshop is learning how to perform online (hot) backups. By placing the database in ARCHIVELOG mode, RMAN can safely capture a consistent image of the data while transactions are actively executing without causing any user downtime.

This course directly targets the advanced objectives tested in the Oracle Database Administration II Exam (1Z0-083). Passing this exam, combined with core experience, unlocks the advanced tiers of the Oracle Database Administration Certified Professional track.

While graphical tools like Oracle Enterprise Manager are touched upon, the vast majority of this workshop is taught using the command-line interfaces for SQL*Plus and RMAN. Mastering the command line is vital for scripting and automating enterprise-level backup processes.
